Response to Intervention

The Douglas County School District believes in providing a world-class education for all students. This letter is to provide you with information about the three-tiered instructional approach we use to address the needs of all learners, referred to as Response to Intervention (RtI).

In RtI, all students participate in the core curriculum, with three levels (tiers) of interventions for students who demonstrate at-risk skills in general academics or behavior. “At risk” can mean the student is working below or above grade level academically and/or is involved in behaviors that are interfering with his/her learning experience. Each tier provides additional support beyond the core curriculum. All students will be assessed throughout the school year to measure their progress and determine whether they are performing at or beyond gradelevel. Behavioral expectations will also be monitored on a regular basis throughout the year.

Universal – Tier I

Teachers will use a variety of instructional strategies aligned to the Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC) to address all students’ educational needs.

Targeted – Tier II

Based on progress monitoring data, students who demonstrate the need for more support (whether they are struggling or have advanced learning needs) in Tier I will be provided supplemental evidence-based interventions matched to their needs. For example, an intervention may be direct instruction targeting a specific skill for a period of time to a small group of learners with similar learning needs. The RtI team, an instructional support team, will monitor the student’s progress, and parents will receive ongoing communication regarding the progress.

Intensive – Tier III

Students who continue to demonstrate the need for more support in Tier Two will receive more intensive interventions at this level. Parents will receive ongoing progress data. After Tier II implementation, students who continue to display limited progress may then be considered for further evaluation and services.

Our school is excited to take part in this process to improve educational outcomes for all students. As always, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have further questions or concerns.
